About

PhD candidates who have employment in their home program, department, or on campus that directly relates to their training objectives may receive funding from this tuition grant mechanism. The grant may be used to cover tuition for up to 9 credit hours per semester for resident and nonresident graduate students in good standing with their PhD programs. Awards should typically be made for both fall and spring semesters if at all possible. Summer semesters are not covered.

Students must be receiving a paid graduate teaching assistant (GTA), graduate research assistant (GRA), or other graduate assistant (GA) position within the home program/department or college. These graduate programs must provide matching funds, which are $12,000 or greater annually, to pay graduate student employees for work completed in GTA, GRA, or GA positions within their home program/department or college.

Amount

Programs make recommendations of eligible students to the Graduate School. Awards in amounts of up to $15,000 per year (for resident tuition) or up to $26,000 (for nonresident tuition, including international students) are processed by Financial Aid. The awarded funds first go towards payment of any unpaid bill (tuition and fees) with refunds made directly to the student if tuition is already covered or if the sum of tuition and fees is less than the award amount. Any remaining tuition/fees not covered by the grant will be the student’s responsibility. Credits added past disbursement date will not be covered, nor will summer tuition.

Programs may use these funds to support eligible students who are supported by a sponsored program, such as making up the difference between resident and nonresident tuition. The tuition grant will cover up to 9 credits of resident or nonresident tuition, per semester, which may be larger than the amount paid to the student for a GTA/GRA/GA position. There is no dollar matching requirement other than the expectation that programs pay students $12,000 annually.

Tuition grant amounts may be different for different students based upon expected number of credit hours or for residency status. Awards cannot be made for more than 9 credit hours per semester at the student’s charged rate. Programs are encouraged to estimate the amount of the award based on anticipated tuition.

Eligibility

Graduate students must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a PhD student with a paid position in the home program/department/college of at least $12,000 annually,
  • Be enrolled full-time or part-time,
  • Be in good standing in all other aspects of their program in accordance with their program graduate student handbook, and
  • Must not have received the UCCS Tuition Matching Grant, an Out-of-State Award, or a Mentored Doctoral Fellowship in the same year.
